Real futbol.... (aka soccer) is a huge deal here. Every boy owns a ball and plays with anyone
and everyone. Half the population wears Real Madrid paraphernalia, and the
other half simply talks about soccer during every conversation. Take our
American obsession with football (the fake one) and times it by 50. You have
now arrived in Spain. Today was the World
Cup Championship, the Superbowl of soccer. You can only imagine how excited
these people were.
Spanish flags
reproduce themselves like bunnies here and not one goes to waste. The majority
of the flags were thrown over balconies or hung from windows. The others served
the special purpose of turning average Spaniards into superheroes. The people
here are all about fashion, and wearing flags as capes seems to fit in nicely.
That being
said, I watched my first entire soccer game on TV. (There are pictures for
proof.) Thanks to my 6 years of experience in little league soccer, I was able
to follow everything pretty easily. Sorry to spoil the end for those who didn’t
watch it, but Spain won. (Woot woot!) In the process, I learned a ton of
Spanish soccer vocabulary and found that they use some of the same words we do.
The most important word here though is “GOAL(!!!!!),” and for Spain, there were
plenty of opportunities to yell it.
The
celebration lasted long into the night and you could hear cars honking their
horns until three in the morning.
